The city records the highest average maximum temperature in the study at 33.33°C, alongside long average daylight hours of 12.25 hours. UV levels remain consistently high throughout much of the year, with an average UV index of 9.08, and clear skies present around 76.25% of the year.

Rainfall in Dubai is rare, averaging just 1.17 days per month and 7.75 mm of monthly rainfall, meaning there are few natural breaks in sun exposure once travellers are outdoors. Low air pollution levels (score: 50.64) further allow UV radiation to reach the ground with little interference.

Krakow and Warsaw, Poland

Polish cities Krakow and Warsaw rank 139th and 138th respectively. Both cities combine modest average highest temperatures with low UV exposure. Krakow records an average highest temperature of 12.67°C and an average UV level of 3.58, while Warsaw averages 12.08°C with a UV level of 3.42. Both cities also experience lower proportions of clear skies, at 46.08% in Krakow and 43.50% in Warsaw. The greater cloud coverage plays a role in limiting prolonged and uninterrupted sun exposure for travellers.

Tromso, Norway

Tromso takes 137th place and stands out for recording the lowest average UV level in the entire study, at a startling 1.25. Although the city experiences the longest average daylight hours, at 12.58 hours per day, UV intensity remains consistently low. This demonstrates that long daylight alone does not automatically mean increased sunburn risk when UV levels are minimal.

It is important to note that lower risk does not mean there is no risk. Even in these destinations, sunburn can still happen during clear spells or after long days outdoors. With this in mind, sun protection remains relevant wherever you travel.

How Sunburn Risk Changes by Month

The risk of sunburn is not fixed throughout the year. While many travellers associate the highest risk with summer holidays, the data shows that exposure can rise at very different times depending on the location.

In some destinations, sunburn risk reaches its highest levels during spring or autumn, when UV intensity remains high but temperatures feel more manageable. In others, long daylight hours or clear skies extend exposure well beyond traditional summer months.

With this in mind, desert destinations typically maintain higher sunburn risk throughout the year due to minimal cloud cover and low rainfall, while Mediterranean locations appear to peak during peak summer travel when daylight hours and UV levels align.

Clear skies, long daylight hours and high UV index levels mean skin can burn quickly, even when it doesn’t feel excessively hot. Travellers should think in terms of layered protection: sunscreen, clothing, shade, and timing of outdoor activities.

Sun cream should be broad-spectrum with a minimum SPF 30, though SPF 50 is preferable in destinations with high UV. SPF should be applied 20 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every two hours, or more frequently if swimming, sweating, or towel-drying. 

A common mistake is underapplying sunscreen or relying on high SPF products to last all day.

In destinations with long daylight hours, it’s sensible to avoid peak UV exposure where possible, typically between 11am and 3pm. This doesn’t mean staying indoors all day, but planning activities for early morning or late afternoon, seeking shade during midday hours, and wearing protective clothing such as hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves can significantly reduce risk. It’s also important to remember that UV exposure remains high even on cloudy days.

Comparing their average temperatures and the number of days of precipitation each city sees throughout winter, with their cost of food and alcohol, we have created an overall top 10 of the best lesser-known cities in Europe to escape to this winter.

Warmer cities with less precipitation and lower costs ranked higher. We only looked at cities with populations of over 100,000 that see less than 3 million tourists per year.

Although hardly the warmest destination overall, Skopje in North Macedonia ranked highest among all the lesser-visited cities we looked at.

The city ranks at the top because of its low prices - a beer here costs just £1.63 on average, and because of its low amount of rain relative to other European cities in winter. It boasts beautiful architecture and surrounding countryside that lay largely unexplored by most western tourists, making it perfect for city dwellers and outdoor adventurers alike.

The cheapest meal overall could be found in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina at just £1.30 per person. The cheapest pint in any European city was in Balti, Moldova at just 65p.

Michele Massa, CEO and travel expert here at Ibiza Summer Villas has advised on if tourists should still think about travelling to overcrowded locations for their winter holiday amid anti-tourism protests.

"Overtourism is definitely a hot topic in Spain right now. In Ibiza, some locals around us are being priced out of the area to make way for hotels and tourist hotspots and protests have started happening. Although we haven't seen any noticeable decrease in demand from British tourists wanting to stay in our Ibiza villas as a result of this, we aren't surprised that some Brits are being deterred from going to overtourism hotspots given the media attention it is receiving right now."

Even so, Michele believes that tourists shouldn't have anything to fear so long as they are going on holiday with respectful intentions: "At the end of the day, overtourism is primarily an issue because of the lack of funding to local communities from our own government. Tourists coming here to visit aren't the real issue - they're bringing in a lot of money."

Michele also comments on the antitourism protests happening around Europe currently: "I think whether or not you should fear the protests really depends on your reason for going on holiday and how you spend your time there. Holidaygoers and families who are there for relaxation, immersing themselves in local culture and having fun should have nothing to worry about. If you're planning on bothering locals with antisocial behaviour, taunting protestors, and making no effort to support local businesses by only buying from large chains, then you might think twice about visiting."

The travel experts here at Ibiza Summer Villas have been analysing levels of reported hate crime, the number of gay-friendly hotels, gay bars and restaurants, and gay events hosted in different towns and cities around Spain to figure which destinations are the best pick.

To make the ranking fairer, we benched numbers against the total populations of each area to create a ranking of the top locations. This was because higher populated areas tended to have more hate crime incidents, and a larger number of hotels, bars and events overall.

These are the best locations for a gay getaway, according to our data.

Top 10 most LGBTQ+ friendly holiday destinations

1. Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

Maspalomas is a world-renowned gay-friendly destination. The resort town has a population of around 36,000 people, which makes it significantly smaller than cities like Barceolona and Madrid. Even so, Maspalomas hosts significantly more gay bars and restaurants - at least 22 of them dotted round the resort, and hotels than most other destinations in the country, and ranked second on our list in terms of nightlife.

Maspalomas Pride and International Carnival attracts almost 300,000 people over the course of its 10 days of shows and events, with plenty of other gay events happening at other points in the year too like Winter Pride in November, and regular drag shows to keep you entertained year-round.

There are over 1.1m people living in the province of Las Palmas, and 14 reported incidents of hate crime across 12 months. This makes the likelihoodl of a queer person being targeted in Maspalomas - which accounts for only around 3% of the population, fairly low.

2. Torremolinos, Andalusia

Torremolinos takes the number two spot in our top 5, with a bustling and vibrant gay community that attracts LGBTQ+ people from across the world. The resort town has at least 26 gay bars situated mostly on its main strip, and the town’s population is almost double the size of Maspalomas or Sitges, making it a lively community. Still, there is no shortage of gay-friendly hotels here as Torremolinos ranked fourth on our list in terms of how much available accommodation there was.

Torremolinos is perhaps the best location in Spain for finding gay events. It’s not limited to its annual Pride event - which already attracts over 40,000 people, as it has a host of popular gay activities taking place all year-round including its Infinity event in October, its Winter Pride in November, or its 5 day Easter festival “Semana Santa” which happens in April.

There were just 3 reported incidents of hate crime in the province encompassing Torremolinos across a 12 month period, meaning it ranked more highly in terms of safety.

3. Ibiza, Balearic Islands

Ibiza is an internationally acclaimed nightlife spot, known for its world-leading club nights, DJ events and beautiful weather. But the island doesn’t yet have the full recognition it deserves for being a top spot for inclusive, LGBTQ+ friendly spaces. There was just one reported incident of hate crime across the Balearic Islands across 12 months, making Ibiza a safe spot for queer people to be themselves.

With at least 22 gay bars situated around Ibiza - mostly around its Old Town, it spoils for choice. The only gay club is Lola’s, but other venues across the island host very gay-friendly events such as Glitterbox where sexual orientation is never paid attention to. In the south of the island you can find Es Cavallet, a gay nudist beach, and it’s in the south of the island that most of the LGBTQ+ life takes spirit.

Ibiza Pride launched in 2015 and it’s now one of the biggest Pride events in Europe, with open-air parties and celebrations taking place in different areas like San Antonio and Ibiza Town’s port area, attracting around 50,000 people.

4. Sitges, Catalonia

Sitges celebrates queer culture every year with its massive Sitges Pride festival which brings more than 45,000 people to the small town, situated just a stone’s throw from Barcelona. The celebration hosts more than 80 free events, making it a hotspot for LGBTQ+ friendly activities. Sitges is also famous within Spain for its Carnaval celebration, where it showcases bright and colourful costumes, exuberant drag culture and plenty of gay events.

And if you’re looking for the best gay nightlife in Spain, Sitges should be at the top of your list as the resort has at least 33 different gay bars and clubs to visit - the most of any destination in the country.

The province of Barcelona, where Sitges is located, had 79 incidents of hate crime across the entire area on the basis of sexual orientation. This number is shocking, but with over 5.5m people in the province and less than 1% of its population living in Sitges, the likelihood of a hate crime occurring here is low.

5. Barcelona

Known for its blend of beautiful beaches and bustling cosmopolitan streets, Barcelona is a popular spot among LGBTQ+ people with over 40 major queer events throughout the year. The Spanish capital also has over 40 LGBTQ+ bars scattered throughout it, and hundreds of LGBTQ+ friendly hotels to choose from.

There were 79 incidents of homophobic hate crime reported in the province of Barcelona across 12 months, but only a small percentage of these were recorded in the city of Barcelona itself.

• For LGBTQ-friendly properties, we used Misterbnb and Expedia, taking samples of 1 bed, 2 bed, and 3 bed apartments in the month of September to see which areas had the most availability. We weighed availability against population size.

The Greek island of Mykonos scored in the top five for six factors: not only does it have the most private jet charters in the study, but it has the 3rd best climate in the study with over 3,103 hours of sunshine a year. 

Just a ferry ride away, Crete achieved 2nd place in the study, scoring in the top 10 for the number of private jet charters, 5* accommodation, and luxury spas. 

Third choice Cyprus is the sunniest option of the top three, with an annual 3,362 hours of sunshine a year. The mediterranean country boasts 131 choices of 5* accommodation, 19 yacht clubs and 16 luxury spaces to unwind in.

Luxurious accommodation is paramount to the most high end of getaways. Bali is a clear winner for the number of 5* hotels with 560 top-notch choices. Dominican Republic comes next with 172 and Crete third with 170. 

But what’s a good sleep without a belly full of good food? The Cayman Islands has the most 4.5* and above restaurants, with 20 to choose between. Bali has just one less, with 19, and Santorini and Hvar come joint 3rd with 18. 

Once you’ve wined and dined and enjoyed a luxurious night’s sleep, top off your holiday with a trip to a luxury spa. Three islands have 18 luxury (4* and above) spas, which are Santorini, the Maldives and Corfu. 

But those lucky enough to own a private jet or their own yacht might want to consider which islands have the best yacht communities and private-charter facilities. Take a Hike at Atlantis

before the chilly winter weather sneaks in, get out and explore the spiritual core of Ibiza by hiking. One of the most popular Ibiza hikes is Atlantis, an old quarry where stones were cut and used to build homes and defense towers for the island. The rock formations are perfectly carved and sunk into the side of the mountain with a view of the magical rock, Es Vedra, just opposite. The area before your hike is reachable by car or scooter, and don’t forget to take water and snacks. The hike down will take about 20 minutes, but it’s the hike up that is the tough part. But hey, summer bodies are made in the winter!

Directions: Head over from Es Cubells to Cala d’Hort. Just after the crest of the hill make a left onto the small camino before the road turns to the right to es Boldado. On the camino you will be able to see Es Vedra ahead of you. At the end of the road, you’ll find a place to park. Atlantis will be in front of you. Prepare for the trek down the mountain and keep to the right. You´re welcome!

Acrobosc Adventure Park

Situated in a large copse of pine trees in between Santa Eulalia and Es Cana, Acrobosc is an assault course with a difference. You are fitted with a safety harness and given basic training to begin with, then off you go! You can slide down zipwires, walk between the trees on tightropes and scramble up cargo nets suspended six metres in the air. Safety is paramount and children under 8 need to be accompanied by an adult.

Slingshot park

Behind the main beach in San Antonio, you can’t fail to spot the Slingshot towers dominating the skyline. For the true adrenaline junky, the Slingshot is a giant catapult that fires you eighty metres into the air at 160 kph!
