Things to do in Ibiza in May

The month of May is a special time in many places across the world, and no more so than in Ibiza, where this month is filled with festivities, celebrations and much more.

May, or ‘Mayo’ in Spanish , is a popular month for visitors to the island who wish to avoid the crowds of the high season, and with an average temperature of 18 degrees, and 8 hours sunshine a day, it is an ideal month to really see the beauty of the island. The sea temperature is also an average of 18 degrees, so the braver ones amongst you may dare to take a dip!

There are many special occasions during this month, one of the most popular is the Medieval Festival, which takes place each year, usually on the second weekend in May. Set in the spectacular old fort of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town, the streets are transformed into a medieval city, with processions, food and drink, performances and stalls with arts and crafts, all themed around the medieval age and history of Ibiza during that time.

Another festival takes place on the first Sunday of the month in Santa Eulalia. Known as the Flower Festival , it runs for several days and sees the town come to life with horse drawn carts, town bands, a classic car show and sporting events, ending in a dramatic firework display.

For the music lovers amongst you, the IMS (International Music Summit) is held each May and this year the dates will be 21-23 May. An important occasion for the worlds music industry, this event heralds the start of the summer season for the big clubs. Hosted by DJ Pete Tong MBE, it showcases up and coming music acts and well known DJ’s and musicians. The IMS takes over Dalt Villa and hosts sensational parties attended by the music industry’s biggest movers and shakers.

Most bars and restaurants are open throughout the month, as the island begins to warm up for the summer visitors. It is often possible to get incredible deals on flights and very competitive prices on Ibiza villas for May, as it is still not classed as ‘high season’, and the beaches and attractions are not as busy and crowded as they can be during July and August.

The island is also at its most beautiful with the flowers and plants of Spring still in evidence and the countryside still rich and green prior to the dry heat of the summer months.

All in all May in Ibiza is a magical month to be enjoyed.
