Spotlight on San Jose

San Jose is a beautifully picturesque town close to San Antonio. A favourite with tourists wanting a bit of peace and tranquillity, the atmosphere is relaxed as you wander around the boutiques and cafes.

Many visit San Jose to view, and learn the history of, its main church. In 1726, the locals asked the visiting Archbishop of Tarragona to advocate the building of a new church. He agreed and that led to the whole community pitching in to help with its construction. It was completed in 1731. Despite some of its original features and works of art being destroyed or damaged in the Spanish Civil War in the late 1930’s, ongoing restoration work means it remains a must see.

Towering over San Jose is Sa Talaia, the highest woodland in Ibiza. A testing walk, but the weary legs are forgotten as you reach the summit and witness a panoramic view of the island and the Mediterranean Sea beyond. On the walk down, you can find wild rosemary and asparagus growing within the woods.

San Jose boasts some of the best restaurants on the island, helped by friendly welcomes and the laid back ambience the small town emanates.

In town, many regard El Destino to be one of the best tapas restaurants in Ibiza. Small and quaint, the service and the food are as good as you will find, but be sure to book to avoid disappointment.

On the main road through town you will see Raco Verd, another relaxed family friendly restaurant/bar. It

has a large shaded area and features good live music throughout the summer months. The delicious food is a mix of Spanish and Mexican and the aromas floating across the street make it all the more appealing.

San Jose is thrust into the limelight in Ibiza in early March when it hosts the ‘Fiesta Mejor’. This festival goes hand in hand with the famous Flower Power parties that take place on the island. The streets are bustling with revellers there to enjoy fireworks displays, street stalls and then dance the night away to great live music in one of the large tents erected for the weekend.

San Jose is ideal for those who want to stay in or around a town with good amenities, enjoy a very relaxed ambience and not be too far away from San Antonio or Ibiza town.
