February is often a month associated with rain, gloomy skies and a post Christmas slump, but not so in Ibiza, when it is one of the most beautiful times to visit the island.
February is generally a fairly cool month, with an average temperature of 13 degrees. However, on a sunny day temperatures can reach up to 16 degrees and there is an average of 9 hours sunshine per day. It can also be a rainy month, and often windy, so best to wear plenty of layers and pack a warm coat for the evenings.
The countryside of Ibiza comes into life in February, with the fields offering a colourful array of wild flowers. The most spectacular sight however is the almond blossom trees, which start to bloom usually around the end of January, (sometimes earlier depending on the temperatures during the month), and last around five weeks. The almond blossom is a beautiful pinkish white, and has a sweet and fragrant scent.
The valley of Santa Agnes, just outside San Antonio is the best place to see the almond blossom in its full glory, as the valley is swathed in the flowering trees. This is a hugely popular attraction, with people travelling from all over Europe to see the breathtaking beauty on display. On the night of the Full Moon in February, hundreds of people gather here and take a moonlight walk through the valley. This really is a magical experience not to be missed.
February is also the month of carnivals in Ibiza, with each town hosting its own parade and street parties. Colourful floats fill the streets, with local schools, dance troupes and sports clubs competing to win the prize for the best decorated float. Each town has its own festivities, which can include traditional dance displays, street markets with local food and drink and agricultural shows.
Of course February is also the month of romance, and where better to celebrate St Valentine’s Day than Ibiza. Many restaurants offer a special menu for the evening, and are decorated for the occasion. Outdoor lovers could pack a picnic and a warm blanket and watch the spectacular sunset. But for a really romantic affair, why not rent a beautiful countryside villa and celebrate with a candlelit dinner for two in complete privacy.
